Getting an electrician out in Adelaide isn't cheap, and prices have crept up a fair bit in 2026. Whether you're upgrading a switchboard, adding a power point, or having a sparkie out to find why the lights keep tripping, knowing what's a fair price before you call helps you avoid getting stung.

This post covers what Adelaide electricians actually charge for common jobs in 2026. I've stuck to real ranges, not the marketing minimums you see in ads.

What's the call-out fee for an Adelaide electrician?

Most Adelaide electricians charge a call-out fee of $80 to $150 just to turn up, even before they start work. Some include the first 15 to 30 minutes in that fee. Others charge the call-out plus their hourly rate from the moment they arrive.

If you're calling after hours, on a weekend, or in an emergency, the call-out fee usually jumps to $150 to $300.

Hourly rates

Adelaide electrician hourly rates in 2026 sit between $90 and $150 per hour for a licensed sparkie. Bigger companies and franchises tend to charge at the upper end. Sole traders and smaller suburban operators are usually $90 to $120 per hour. Apprentices working alongside the licensed electrician might be billed at $50 to $80 per hour on top.

What do common jobs cost?

These are the ones I get asked about most often. Prices include parts and labour, business hours, no extra trip charges.

  • Power point installation in an existing wall: $150 to $250 per outlet.
  • Power point installation in a new location (new wiring): $250 to $450 per outlet.
  • Light fitting replacement (like for like): $80 to $180.
  • LED downlight retrofit (replacing halogens): $40 to $80 per light, much cheaper if you do 6 to 10 in one visit. We covered this in detail in our LED downlight upgrades post.
  • Ceiling fan installation: $200 to $400.
  • Safety switch (RCD) installation: $200 to $400 for one circuit, less per circuit if you do the whole house at once.
  • Smoke alarm installation (240V hardwired): $80 to $150 each.
  • Hot water system electrical reconnect: $150 to $300.
  • Three phase power upgrade: $1,500 to $4,000 (full breakdown in our post on three phase power costs in Adelaide).
  • Full switchboard upgrade: $1,500 to $4,000 depending on what's there now and what's needed.

Why are switchboard upgrades so expensive?

Two reasons. One, most older Adelaide homes built before 2000 have ceramic fuses, no safety switches, and not enough circuit breakers for modern appliance loads. Replacing that takes time and parts. Two, an upgrade often triggers compliance work on other parts of the system, like running a new earth or relocating meter equipment.

If your switchboard is the original 1970s or 80s ceramic fuse box and you're adding an electric vehicle charger, solar, or a heat pump hot water system, the upgrade isn't optional. The new equipment needs more amps than the old board can safely deliver.

What about electricians in the Adelaide Hills?

If you're up in Stirling, Aldgate, Bridgewater, Mount Barker, or anywhere through the Hills, expect to pay a $20 to $40 travel surcharge on top of the standard call-out. A few Hills based electricians don't charge it, but they're usually the ones based in Mount Barker or Aldgate themselves.

The Adelaide Hills also has a much higher proportion of older homes with original wiring, so switchboard upgrades and earth stake replacements are a bigger chunk of the work up there than down in the metro suburbs.

How do I know if a quote is fair?

Three checks.

First, the quote should be written, not verbal. If a sparkie won't put a price in writing, walk away.

Second, the quote should list parts and labour separately. You should be able to see what you're paying for the GPO, what for the cable, and what for the time.

Third, get a second quote on anything over $500. A 10 minute phone call to another electrician can save you $200 to $300 on a switchboard or full lighting job. Most decent Adelaide sparkies will give a rough phone quote for free if you describe the job clearly.

How long does a typical Adelaide electrical job take?

Most small jobs (single power point, light fitting swap, ceiling fan) are done in under an hour. LED downlight retrofits across a whole house take half a day. Switchboard upgrades take a full day and require the power to be off for most of it. Three phase upgrades can take two days because SA Power Networks needs to attend for the meter changeover.

If your job needs SA Power Networks involvement (a new connection, a meter upgrade, three phase), factor in a few weeks of lead time on top of the electrician's own schedule.

Quick price summary

For a typical Adelaide household in 2026:

  • Call-out: $80 to $150
  • Hourly rate: $90 to $150
  • Power point install: $150 to $450
  • Light or fan install: $80 to $400
  • Switchboard upgrade: $1,500 to $4,000
  • After hours premium: roughly double

Get two quotes on anything over $500. Pay in stages on bigger jobs. And make sure your sparkie is licensed (you can check on the SA Government Consumer and Business Services website before you sign off).
