LED downlights have become standard. The cost has come down. The choices are confusing. Here is straight talk on what to expect for an Adelaide LED upgrade.
Why upgrade
If you have got halogen downlights, they use about 50 watts each. A typical Adelaide home with 30 downlights running 5 hours a day uses about $700 a year on lighting.
Equivalent LED downlights use about 7 watts each. Same setup costs about $100 a year. Annual savings of $500 to $700 for a typical home.
Plus halogen downlights run very hot, are a fire risk if insulation is touching them, and the bulbs need replacing regularly. LEDs run cool and last 25,000 hours plus.
What it costs to upgrade in Adelaide
Simple bulb swap (where the fitting accepts LED retrofit bulbs): $5 to $15 per bulb. DIY-able for many people if you can safely access them.
Full fitting replacement with new LED downlights: $80 to $180 per fitting including labour. The total for a 30-fitting upgrade is around $2,500 to $5,500.
Common pitfalls
Cheap LED downlights from overseas suppliers have poor build quality. Many fail within 1 to 3 years. Stick to known brands: HPM, Clipsal, ML Accessories, Brightgreen, Verbatim.
Some halogen fittings cannot accept LED retrofits because the wiring or housing is wrong. You think you have a $5 bulb swap but you actually need a $120 fitting replacement.
Dimmer compatibility matters. Old halogen dimmers do not work with LEDs - you get flicker, buzz, or limited dimming range. Get LED-compatible dimmers installed if you want dimming.
Color temperature matters more than people think. 'Warm white' (2700K to 3000K) feels cozy. 'Cool white' (4000K to 5000K) is harsh in residential spaces. 'Daylight' (5000K+) is even harsher. For most Adelaide homes, 3000K is the right call.
What about MR16 and GU10 fittings
MR16 (12V) and GU10 (240V) are the two most common halogen downlight types in Australian homes. Both have direct LED replacements.
MR16 LED retrofits need the transformer to be 'LED-compatible'. Old transformers often are not. Sometimes cheaper to replace the whole fitting than to chase down compatible transformers.
GU10 LED retrofits work in most existing fittings as a direct swap. Easiest upgrade path.
What we recommend
For most Adelaide homes, full fitting replacement with quality LED downlights is the better choice. Higher upfront cost but no compatibility issues and longest service life. We use quality fittings with 5-year warranties as standard.
